As project three comes closer and closer, I very excited to be able to express my creativity skills on a whole new level. I have been thinking of a photograph since I explored photography in high school. I think editing the photograph will come as a challenge since I no longer have access to photoshop. In the text by Shipka, she speaks about compositions being made whole. Throughout the text she explains and describes that there are many factors and determinants that go into a composition. She states that influence comes for all around you. This includes friends, family and others that you come in contact with everyday. Shipka also agues that you can not judge a piece just by it’s finished product. You must take into account all the elements that led up to and helped complete that finished composition. I think that project in project three we will be implementing Skipka’s view on composition. We are asked to develop a project that best represents us for who we are and what we do. Also where we see ourselves in the future. Project three will give me a chance to display myself not only through writing but through a picture. This allows me too much more creative with what I have in mind. This is going to be an amazing project that we will be able to express ourselves rhetorically with little use of words. This is very new to me and my classmates and I can not wait to see other people’s idea unfold.

The third project for my ENW 100 class is a self portrait assignment. This sounds like a unique, new and fun project to complete. The assignment asks us to create a self portrait of ourselves describing our likes, dislikes and goals in the future. In high school I was very creative when it came to pictures. I took various photography classes that will ultimately help me create a very innovative third project. This might come more difficult than it did in high school because my projects in high school were more pictures of other people and other things. This challenge should be very new and different than I have ever experienced. I am very used to using photoshop as an editing tool for my pictures but college does not provide this software so I will have to explore different editing tools. At the moment I am brainstorming the different way I can incorporate my life into a self portrait. At the end of the project we are asked to make a statement of goals which describes what we did to the photo. I think this is a great part of the assignment because sometimes pictures need explanation and words to describe whats going on. Everyone thinks differently and portrays everyone uniquely and therefore can have different perceptions of the project. In conclusion it think this assignment will be very challenging but fun at the same time. I can not wait to start brainstorming my idea for the self portrait.

After the completion of the white paper project, I was asked to reflect on what I learned throughout the project. The white paper came as a very challenging and new assignment that I had never done before. Throughout the writing process I was required to research about my project topic, which was accounting. After researching I learn much more about writing with the accounting profession. I also need to research how to construct a white paper. It is evident that I lacked the creativity skills required to make an appealing project. After hearing the word “research” I did not think that this would be a creative assignment at all. I was grossly mistaken. I learned that the doc design for a white paper needs to be vibrant and drawing so the reader is interested in learning more about your topic. I decided to design my project in a less informative and more reader friendly way. My introduction was basically a summary of my total project. I thought this was a good idea because it would tell the reader what they were about to read for the next two pages. Another thing that was new to me about this project was formulating my own solution at the end of my research. Most research papers that I have written in the past do not ask for my opinion about the topic. Asking for my opinion and solution made me much more engaged in the paper. Instead of just stating what other people think, I was able to say what was on my mind. The peer review also helped me rethink and better my second draft. My classmates were able to critique my white paper and gave me great pointers as to what I did well, and what I need to work on. In conclusion the white paper was a new great learning experience.

Robert R. Johnson is a professor of rhetoric, composition, and technical communication at the University of Michigan. In the text titled “For Romancing the Atom”, Johnson writes too different subjects. His first and primary audience throughout the text are his students and fellow professors. It is also safe to say that the text can be intend for those also interested in learning more about rhetoric. This text is also used to persuade his readers while also informing them about the topic. Throughout the article Johnson stresses the idea of manipulation. He believes that actions of others as well as ourselves are created by manipulation of events. Throughout the text, Johnson argues how different rhetoric and language is used through this manipulation. He argues that the certain way humans handle situations causes unique communication and rhetoric between different people. Johnson also uses a lot of primary sources in his text. He uses sources such as Albert Einstein quotes as well as various reports from very intellectual scientists. To discuss rhetoric more in depth Johnson also wrote “For the Love of Pretty Things: The Radium Girls and ‘Dying for Science.” In this text also portraits the same message as the last text but in a different way. This story about five women who were unaware that they were consuming and touching radioactive materials. At first these women did not know why they became ill but they later figured it was out it was due to the radium watches. When the five women talk about their illness they used rhetoric to persuade their listeners that the company was at fault for this tragedy. This came very difficultly for the women because they had to gain support from people other than themselves. In conclusion these two articles show how rhetoric can be used and is created by societal events.

I decided to choose to research rhetoric and writing within accounting. Since I was a junior in high school I have always been very interested in accounting. I took a class in high school which was Accounting 100 and in that class I really did not encounter much writing. After researching a lot about writing in accounting I noticed that accountants write a lot more than I thought. Everyday they are writing up reports and statements about the work that they previously completed. This really shocked me because I did not think that accountants did any writing in their work. This research also helped me figure out what being an accountant entitles. I have recently wanted to major in accounting and this research gave me a heads up of what is to come. This research showed me that I would be a good candidate to major in accounting. After finding various texts and articles it is evident that the writing that accounts do is more than people think. Most of the work is reports they do on various financial statements. For example one article gives an example about the writing after the completion of an income statement. After the completion of an income statement they not only have to close out the accounts but if they found errors or mistakes they are required to report the mistakes on a separate spreadsheet. Even though most people think that accounts most used computer program is Excel, one article argues that accounts use Word more. This reports are not one word responses either. Most of the time they are long thought responses because if they are not then it means they did not complete the financial statements correctly. In conclusion after my extensive research I realized how much writing accountants actually do.

Jason Palmeri conducts a case study titled “When Discourses Collide. Jason Palmeri is a doctoral student of english. The study at Ohio State University is intended for students and colleagues of the english and rhetoric department. This study was conducted for people to gain a better understanding of the dichotomies and challenges that occur when two or more discourse groups interact. Throughout the article titled “When Discourses Collide”, Palmeri describes how one discourse uses completely different rhetoric and tone than other discourse does. in the article the author uses an example between an attorney and a nurse and the different rhetoric each group uses. Attorney uses their voice and emotion as opposed to a nurse who uses more of her writing and reading. Each of these groups uses different “types” of rhetoric throughout their daily lives. The author later argues about the interaction between two discourse and what type of rhetoric is being used. The main argument that the author makes is that when two different types of discourse groups interact chaos can occur. Like the example that Palmeri gives earlier, the nurser and the attorney would have a hard time working together because they don’t communicate the same way. Discourses that are similar most of the time have similar ways of rhetoric but not always. The ability to be part of multiple discourse group becomes an important asset for a person. A person who can talk with multiple types of people ultimately works better in groups. In conclusion the author of the article explains how difficult rhetoric can be between two different discourses.

Research is a necessary component in writing an informative piece. Research is a collection of texts and evidence from a reliable source. This research is used to support a person claim while also making their argument stronger. You can also learn from research. Sometimes this knowledge can help you organize your thought on a topic. Research can also be physical. For example a scientist can research for an experiment to find out the answer to a problem. Research in the scientific field especially helps scientist prove points about their experiment. Even though all these uses of research are different, they all contribute uniquely. Most research is used to strengthen arguments or gain knowledge but as you can see there are also many other uses for research. I mainly use research when completing essays for school. Researching really helps me brainstorm and map out my essay before I even put pen to paper. I also use research as evidence to back up and strengthen the point I am arguing in an essay. I sometimes have issues while compiling the data from researching. When I research too much I sometimes can not choose the most important and prevalent data. When you are given a task to research a certain topic I sometimes branch off and research too in depth about a topic. In conclusion research is a very helpful tool in writing.

After just finishing the first project of ENW 100, I was asked to reflect on the project. First off this project taught me a lot about rhetorical ecologies. Before starting this assignment I was unaware of how many ecologies I could consider myself apart of. When it came down to actually completing the first project I was torn between my different ecologies. I ended up choosing baseball because I feel like it was one of the ecologies I most closely associated myself with. This project also taught me the various and unique dialogue that people use if they consider themselves to be within the baseball ecology. Different ecologies promote different forms and tones of speech. This was important in my memo as I described the different slang used in baseball. As I was completing the memo< i realized how many different “areas” of baseball you can be apart of. Before this project I never thought that the sport of baseball connected people from so many different cultures in so many ways. The map part of the project gave me a hard time at first. The map asked us to use our design and creativity skill to create a map of your rhetorical ecology. As a person who is not very creative, this project taught me how important it is to be creative in your work. It showed me relationships between colors and shapes as well as contrast and saturation. These design terms I would never even think matter until I completed this project. In conclusion the first project on rhetorical ecologies taught me a lot about my ecology as well design.

The text titled “You Can Learn to Write in General” is written by Elizabeth Wardle. Wardle is a professor and director of writing at the Howe Center in Miami, Ohio. The texts audience can be students or young adults who are interested in the differences in writing. Throughout the text Wardle states why she believes writing is very general. She argues that based on the subject you are writing for, your writing habits and techniques will change. Everyone writes in their profession and because all professions are different, all writing within those professions will be unique. Later in the text Wardle talks about rhetorical situations. She believes that when writing you are automatically placed into a different rhetorical situation. Your writing changes for each rhetorical situation you are apart of. This opinion is different from Bitzer’s opinion because Bitzer says that you are able to choose to be apart of a rhetorical situation.

The essay written by Carolyn R. Miller discusses genre and classification of rhetorical writing. millers definition of genre is “a typified response to a recurring rhetorical problem”. Throughout the essay she argues that genre is one of the main determinants of how a discourse works. Miller is a retired professor who while working focused on the exploration of rhetorical genre. Miller argues that there is a collective response for a specific rhetorical problem. For example these rhetorical problems often repeat themselves for a specific rhetorical need. In the essay Miller describes how genre is evolving, socially constructed and situated in activity systems. If a genre is socially constructed that means there is a social norm associated with the genre. Genre boundaries are in flux at all times and they are not perfect. Finally genre is evolving due to increases in technology and changes in the formality of writing.

During this part of the project I revised my map and wrote out the memo. While completing this I was working in the same familiar spot that I always work on homework in. This familiarity helps me concentrate and get work done. This revision was different than the others because I started the memo from scratch. First thing I did before writing the memo was I gathered all my information and wrote out the bullet points which I wanted to talk about in the memo. This helps a lot because I am a very visual learner and worker. The memo took me a long time to compose. Not so much the actual writing but instead choosing the most important points to talk about. This is very difficult for me because I wanted to include so much more but I could not. After finishing the rough draft of the memo, I revised my map. In class we split up into groups of three and four and exchanged maps. This class really helped me see what the map should look like. I not only got feedback on my map but I also gave feedback to others. Giving feedback to other people honestly helped me more than I previously thought it would. I got to see how other people interpreted the map instructions. I am a very stress free person when it comes to homework. I think stress can be easily controlled especially if you start work way before the due date. There is really nothing I would like to change about my revision. I definitely think it was a good idea having another revision especially after the in class group work. Without the group work in class I would not be able to revise my map as well as I did. In conclusion my revision process was very mainly based on the criticism I received from my group members in class.
